Since the beginning
of the motorized taxicab in 1907, New York City cabs have been an
important means of the modern public transportation network. Today,
there are more than 12,000 yellow cabs servicing the city. The number
of passengers using taxicab service is reaching more than 200 million
per year. There are many issues about cabs and cab service, but to
me the most interesting subject is the taxi driver, himself. The drivers
are one of the most ethnically diverse group of professionals in New
York. They represent more than 80 countries and speak more than 60
languages. The drivers work on average for 10 hours a day, making
20 trips and traveling 140 miles.
